Job Description:

Tehama County is seeking a new team member to join Tehama County Department of Child Support Services as Child Support Attorney! This position performs a variety of professional legal work in child support civil cases and provides legal direction regarding child support filings to Department staff. An ideal candidate is committed to excellent customer service, must be able to manage a large caseload, complete tasks in a timely manner, have a professional and assertive courtroom presence, and be dedicated to attendance as the department’s only attorney with weekly court appearances. This position differs from private practice in that most duties involve teamwork with case management staff and includes following local and state policies and procedures. Strong computer skills are necessary as the department e-files, utilizes DocuSign, and utilizes an online case management system.

Responsibilities:

  • Investigates, researches, and prepares child support cases for litigation or prosecution.
  • Negotiates with attorneys regarding the disposition of civil matters and/or modification of charges in specific cases.
  • Investigates, researches, and prepares for the more complex cases.
  • Serves as the attorney of record in all legal actions and proceedings filed on behalf of the County.
  • Represents the public interest on cases and provides legal guidance for Department staff.

Qualifications:

Education, Experience & Licenses

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.   A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: 

  • Child Support Attorney II: One (1) year of experience as a general practicing attorney.
  • Child Support Attorney III: Two (2) years of experience as a general practicing attorney.
  • Child Support Attorney IV: Three (3) years of experience as a general practicing attorney.

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered

License & Special Requirements :

  • Requires a valid California driver’s license
  • Special requirement for all levels: Active membership in the State Bar of California
  • Due to IRS Publication 1075 Guidelines as established by the Federal Government and required by California Department of Child Support Services, all employees will be subject to a background check at the time of hiring and at least every 5 years
